17 Best Lifestyle Photographers in Los Angeles

BY Sankha Wanigasekara 8 August 2022
Lifestyle Published, Listicle

Shiny, bright, and surreal. The City of Angels has an unparalleled hold on America and the rest of the world, painting a way of life to strive for and be envious of by every possible standard. If you’re looking for this slice of Americana to be caught on camera and help position your brand in the most fashionable light, our list of the best Los Angeles lifestyle photographers is a great place to start.

At Wonderful Machine, we define lifestyle photography as “the depiction of an idealized, aspirational version of real life, usually showing happy, attractive people in nice clothing doing fun things in beautiful places.”

Whether you’re a creative director at an advertising agency or an editor for a print and digital publication, these photographers will infuse the sun-soaked spirit of Los Angeles into your next commercial and editorial assignments.

Siri Berting

We start our list of the best Los Angeles lifestyle photographers with Siri Berting, who has over 15 years of experience as a commercial photographer. Having worked with numerous brands both large and small during this time, she’ll be a guiding light across all stages of your next campaign, from planning shot lists and crafting treatments to hiring crew and shooting content that ultimately lands with your target audience. And what’s more, she’ll light up your images with the California sun in both indoor and outdoor settings.

Her extensive list of clients is definite proof of this, including Terranea Resort, Airbnb, Bed Bath & Beyond, FOX, GlaxoSmithKline, and Pfizer, just to name a few.

Jared Schlachet & Joe Magnani (JSquared)

JSquared is a photography duo comprised of Joe Magnani and Jared Schlachet, and after working together for over a decade, the two have made their names known around Tinseltown. They’ve had the likes of Mark Ruffalo and Zoë Kravitz in front of the camera while boasting a clientele that includes Amazon Studios, Apple, and Netflix among many others. Their photos have also adorned the pages of many print and digital publications including Billboard, Entertainment Weekly, GQ, and The Hollywood Reporter.

Their lifestyle photography stands out for capturing the great sense of adventure we find in the outdoors, sports, and fitness. So, if your brand is looking to encapsulate the love and joy we discover in labor, JSquared should be at the top of your contacts.

Tom Kubik

Bringing a wealth of experience through his global travels and military service, Tom Kubik’s lifestyle and portraiture photography is a testament to that age-old adage of a picture being worth a thousand words. You can’t help but look for the story behind his images, whether it’s a couple in a trance at a music festival or a woman laughing ecstatically while lying on her yoga mat. Through honest and intimate portrayals, there’s a deep sense of personal connection in his photos that’ll make him an ideal candidate to tell your brand’s next story.

Some of Tom’s clients include Adidas, Samsung, Microsoft, Cisco, Facebook, and HSBC.

Andrea D’Agosto

After completing art school in Madison, Wisconsin, Andrea moved to Los Angeles and embedded herself in the culinary world, photographing foods, chefs, and restaurants along the West Coast and elsewhere. Suffice to say that she’s quite the specialist when it comes to food and drink photography.

However, she also has a knack for capturing the flavors of everyday life, looking beyond the magical way in which food brings us all together. Her images are rich and vibrant, letting color and contrast bring the subject to life when their emotions perhaps may not.

John Davis

John Davis is a Los Angeles-based portrait and lifestyle photographer who, we must say, is quite masterful at capturing a smile. While he does live and work on both coasts of the US, there’s a summery feel to his work that typifies Los Angeles, and it’s a quality sought after by many of his clients. He has collaborated with the likes of Men’s Health, Forbes, Under Armour, Adweek, and The Food Network.

He also happens to be a photographer whose personal hobbies fuel his creative passions. As someone who trains for marathons and plays ice hockey in his spare time, he’s more than up to the challenge of photographing the world of sports and fitness, as his website will prove.

Travis McCoy

With photos that are light and breezy on the eyes, Travis McCoy embodies the aura of an eternal summer through his images, where his subjects and surroundings carry a carefree and cheerful energy. If life’s a party, Travis is the one to document it.

Travis can just as easily switch gears, though, as his work in the arena of sports and fitness will prove. He has photographed the raw and gritty nature of this world with campaigns for the NFL, Nike, and behind-the-scenes projects in MMA. The recognizable faces of basketballer James Harden and mixed martial arts fighter Brian Ortega have been seen in his photos.

Asami Zenri

After time spent living and working in England and Japan, Asami Zenri moved to Los Angeles in 2011, starting a new chapter as a lifestyle photographer. While her creative roots are laid down in fashion, her lifestyle work plants a seed of curiosity in the viewer’s mind. Bathed in the summer heat — we long for more than a peek into each subject’s life.

She has worked for numerous brands over the years, including ASICS, PSD, Known Supply, Bella + Canvas, and Alo Yoga.

Victoria Wall Harris

After studying photography at the College of Charleston in South Carolina, Victoria Wall Harris moved to New York City and learned the ropes from countless industry veterans. Once she closed her seven-year stint in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg, Victoria moved to LA in 2012 and ventured out on her own, opening a daylight photo studio as well in the process.

Her lifestyle work lets robust colors shine through in vivid terms, and a central theme of her images is friendship and family. If her work is any indication, she’s more than capable of capturing the chaos and elation of living with children.

When she’s not doing lifestyle photography, you can see Victoria working her magic across other specialties such as still life, food and drink, travel, hospitality, and portraitures, getting familiar faces like Kristen Bell and Nick Offerman to smile for her camera lens (which is no easy feat with the latter).

Tiffany Luong

Family is the centerpiece in most of our lives, and commercial lifestyle and editorial photographer Tiffany Luong makes it her job to observe and document the stories of our lives. It’s an “anthropological participant-observer” approach that elevates individual moments into compelling narratives, and it’s an approach that clients such as YouTube, Honda, Canva, Ben & Jerry’s, and Dropbox have sought from her. Tiffany’s style of photography suits brands that strive to create moments and experiences rather than mere physical products or services for consumption.

Her personal photography explores the ideas of cultural preservation, family history, and intergenerational healing.

Michelle McSwain

After a formative spell handling photo editing and retouching for The New York Times and Yahoo Inc, Michelle McSwain pieced together her trademark style of commercial portrait and lifestyle photography. It’s one that complements the mood of the city she currently lives in, brimming with bright light, warmth, and the sunniest of dispositions from her subjects and settings.

There’s no arguing that her style brings results, having worked with the likes of Nintendo, Girl Scouts, JBL, Soundcloud, SPANX, Facebook, Wine Spectator, Barkbox, and AMC Networks.

While the majority of her projects have been stateside, she’s more than up for projects in distant destinations, especially places that boast a decent glass of wine and the sun high in the sky.

Teal Thomsen

A traveler at heart, Teal Thompson is most alive when she’s on the road, as she takes in all the information pouring through her senses and distills them into her photos. Her experiences of various travels have been featured in Conde Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, Hemisphere, and many publications.

She also specializes in commercial and editorial photography in the lifestyle, architecture, and still life categories. Teal creates photo compositions by prioritizing detail, color, and natural light, a simple yet effective philosophy that has led to projects with Apple, American Airlines, TripAdvisor, and Crate & Barrel among many others.

Bethany Nauert

After earning a BFA in Photography from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, Bethany Nauert split her time between New York City and the Bay Area before moving to LA in 2006. Since 2009, she’s been a full-time photographer concentrating on the lifestyle and interiors specialties in both residential and commercial environments.

In the conventional sense, lifestyle photography depicts an “aspirational version of life” through the people in the images. While Bethany certainly ticks that box, she goes the extra mile and lets the setting make a statement as well. It could be a photo of a father and son chatting happily on their doorstep, with a neat and symmetrical presentation from front to back creating the sense of an ideal and nurturing family life, all through the cleanliness of the image. The surrounding serves as an extension of the subjects, and Bethany portrays that connection skillfully.

This meticulous process has led to collaborations with Amazon Home, Brooklinen, simplehuman, and Hilton Hotels to name a few.

Jayme Burrows

Jayme Burrows is a lifestyle photographer in Los Angeles whose work is informed by her education in fine arts and visual journalism. She earned a B.A. in Art History and History at the University of California at Santa Barbara before heading to the Brooks Institute to study visual journalism and attain her MFA in Photography.

It’s training that has paid dividends, seen across her portfolio in the food, travel, hospitality, and lifestyle specialties. Her photos absorb a wealth of colors, displaying a sharpness to everything from the subject to elements in the background.

Some of her clients include Airbnb, Pinterest, Expedia, Alliance, Samsung, and SiriusXM.

Margo Moritz

After earning her MFA in Photography from the Academy of Art, Margo Moritz worked as a lifestyle, portrait, and dance photographer in San Francisco. But even 14 years in the Bay Area couldn’t halt the pull of Los Angeles, where she now continues to build on the amazing portfolio she began up north.

As someone who has operated for years in the performing arts community, her photos certainly have a flair for the dramatic, finding raw and honest stories in even the most mundane of moments, raising them to surreal heights.

Her photos have been seen in The New York Times, Nob Hill Gazette, Surface, San Francisco Magaine, and the websites of Carbon Five, Artsy, Mashable, and countless others.

Marisa Guzmán-Aloia

A graduate of the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, Marisa currently resides in Los Angeles working as a portrait and lifestyle photographer. Whether it’s at home, work, or any other setting, Marisa’s direction on photoshoots ensures the most natural and relaxed environments, harnessing light and composition to bring the best out of her subjects. A smile is a staple of her portraiture, lifestyle, and work-life photos.

Some of Marisa’s clients include TTR Sotheby’s Realty, The Washingtonian, Terranea Resort Magazine, and CARR Properties.

Erik Isakson

Erik Isakson is a lifestyle photographer in Los Angeles who has found a niche in sports and fitness lifestyle imagery. It was something he knew he’d pursue from the age of 11, after receiving a free camera with his Sports Illustrated subscription. Once he started testing and experimenting with that plastic camera back in the day, there was no stopping him. Today, you can find Erik chasing athletes across an entire spectrum of sports, even photographing the top brass in the fields of basketball, MMA, and soccer.

In addition, he’s a keen observer of technology’s impact on people, using his photos to illustrate the power of devices to enrich our personal and professional lives. It’s another niche that serves as a second home for him, and one that promises to showcase more of his future work given our increasing reliance on all things digital.

Erik has been part of advertising campaigns for ESPN, Samsung, Chevrolet, Nike, and Unilever. His images have also been featured in countless magazines, including the one that ignited his passion for photography: Sports Illustrated.

Rocco Ceselin

After growing up in Italy and studying graphic design, Rocco Ceselin pursued his childhood dream of exploring the United States in 2002 when he moved to California. After a brief stop in San Francisco, he settled down in LA, where the melting pot of cultures had him impulsively reaching for his camera to document the adventure and excitement around him. Eventually, his passion for photography became a transformative career.

Rocco is one of the few Los Angeles lifestyle photographers to exhibit true breadth and versatility in his portfolio. He has captured the many facets of American society, whether it’s in wine country, the coast, the neighborhoods of the rich, or the everyday household.

He has worked with brands and publications including Variety, Cosmopolitan, National Geographic, Chick-fil-A, and Lenovo.
