Boston is an economic powerhouse. It’s a center for education, innovation, business, and tourism. It’s also home to close to 700,000 people. Even getting a small fraction of that number’s attention could lead to a remarkable change in financial fortunes if you’re operating a business. One way to get that attention is through striking imagery for your goods and services, and our list of the seven best product photographers in Boston would be more than happy to take your call.
At Wonderful Machine, we define product photography as “any inanimate object not covered by our other specialties, often products.”
With that definition in mind, let’s dive into our talent pool of seven, going off-path just a little but with plenty of reason to warrant it.
We’re starting off our list of product photographers in Boston with a bit of a detour. While we have an entire specialty dedicated to food and drink, Adam DeTour’s work in the space also deserves to be included here. While he’s exceptional at photographing sips and dishes, he’s also a master at presenting them in their original product packaging. So, if you need photos of a Starbucks Frappuccino bottle or a Siggi’s yogurt cup before its contents are emptied into your belly, Adam’s definitely the guy for it. His sharp eye and creative vision will present your products in the most optimal light, letting vibrant colors shine through while the natural ingredients of those items accompany the background if needed.
Select clients of his include Edible Boston, New York Times Magazine, Boston Magazine, Seven Elm, and Soul Cycle.
We’re still on our detour because Melissa Shanahan and Chelsea Nye, who make up Amy Rose photography (a combination of their middle names if you didn’t notice), aren’t your typical Boston product photographer duo. While Chelsea started pursuing a career in photography during her teens, Melissa had a detour of sorts with a path in corporate communication. But before long, she knew she had to drop it all and join her friend’s line of work. Today, they specialize in travel, portraiture, and interiors photography.
Suffice it to say, they’re not product photographers in the conventional sense. But in capturing interiors of homes and other properties, they’ve developed a knack for photographing furniture and all the other accompaniments that make any space worth living in. Color is in no short supply in their photos, sometimes used sparingly and sometimes in wild flourishes to embody the true essence of a space and the objects that call it home.
Their style has been vouched for by clients such as Berkshire, Lucidity Lights, Perigold, and Wolverine Worldwide.
It’s time for the second Adam on our list, a Boston product photographer with an eye for beauty, fashion, and cosmetic items. Through complementary and analogous color combinations, Adam Krauth dreams up conceptual perspectives for a whole assortment of products. For example, he can make lipstick tubes look completely natural resting on top of grey concrete blocks, or a perfume bottle feel at ease surrounded by a series of equidistantly spaced yellow chains. This is all brought to fruition through his fusion of harmonious colors, textures, and geometric shapes and patterns.
His work is a sight to behold, which clients such as Hasbro, Reebok, HomeGoods, Marshalls, and TJ Maxx can corroborate.
Through dramatic lighting, high-octane angles, and, if needed, a smoke machine and a hint of retouching, Christian Goulette will make your product feel like the hero of an upcoming blockbuster movie. Christian specializes in product photography, delivering an excellent standard of images through his meticulous approach. His background as a digital technician and retoucher pays off in spades during shoots, letting clients have a glimpse of the final deliverables ahead of time. In addition, he embraces new digital capture techniques to aid traditional aspects of photography, enhancing the artistic elements of the client’s vision.
On top of shooting food and liquids, Christian’s product photography is centered on tech and hardware, from knives and fishing rods to electronics and their ancillary components. He has a natural eye for the tools of labor we use in everyday life.
After earning his BFA in Photography from Montserrat College of Art, Leonard Greco moved to New York and did some more learning in the photography archives at Condé Nast Publications. He then went on to get some extra credit managing the studio of Todd Selby.
His education and experience certainly worked in his favor, leading to collaborations with Timberland, Levi Strauss, The NY Times Style Magazine, Bloomberg Business Week, and Fast Company, among many other brands. Leonard exhibits a range of shooting styles to suit the client’s brand identity and the specific campaign. He’ll have Bose’s in-ear headphones appear like Christmas lights for their December promos or Kenneth Cole shoes blend into the interior of your home like ornaments on a wooden tabletop. In essence, he gives products the red carpet treatment at all times.
He’s a Boston product photographer to watch for in both commercial and editorial environments.
Mark James Dunn is a fashion photographer based in the Boston, New York City, and Los Angeles areas. His product photography is largely an extension of his primary specialty, presenting items in studio settings and out and about in the world. Whether it’s shoes, handbags, sunglasses, or wristwatches, he’ll have them blend into a photo during their practical uses, getting a model along to help the process. So, in addition to displaying your products as centerpieces through studio photoshoots, he’ll also have you selling them through natural and authentic-looking lifestyle imagery.
Mark’s work style has received the adoration of brands such as Polo, Reebok, McDonald’s, and Rue La La, to name a few.
Based just north of Boston in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Kate Benson runs a product and fashion photo studio serving an array of national clients. She’s someone who embraces the calm and peace of small-town living after escaping the city life, and this attitude of zen is reflected in her work.
Half of her portfolio exhibits the use of vibrant colors to showcase products through pop art influences, relying on minimalism across the board to let the products shine through. The other half calls on Mother Nature to aid her photoshoots, complementing the product in question with floral props to assist decoratively. She has utilized both philosophies with jewelry, fashion accessories, and beauty and cosmetic items.
Her refreshing style of photography has reeled in brands such as Adidas, Diamonds Direct, Frida Baby, Eberjey, and Starborough Sauvignon Blanc, among several others.
And there you have it. Seven different product photographers in Boston, each with their unique styles of imagery focusing on different types of products. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach in this space, so depending on your brand’s or publication’s requirements, there may be one or several solutions available to you on this list. If it’s seven, well, you’re certainly spoiled for choice!
