It’s always a dream-come-true when a photographer’s personal travels lineup with the needs of a client. That scenario recently played out for San Francisco-based commercial photographer Angela DeCenzo, whose photographs of Copenhagen appear in the May issue of Coastal Living.
Angela had planned her trip to the beautiful city last September to photograph the opening of Pink Zebra, her chef-husband’s pop-up restaurant. Before she went, she checked in with a few photo editors to see if they might have a need for her travel photography, and voila! Kristen Fielder, the photo editor at Coastal Living, said they were planning a story on Copenhagen for early 2015, and gave her a shot list. Although it wasn’t initially set-in-stone, Angela took the opportunity to shoot what she loves (travel, food and portraiture in a beautiful setting) and explore the city.
Not having access to Google Maps was an initial challenge which turned out to be the best thing ever. I bought a good old fashioned paper map of Copenhagen and learned my way around the city in about two days. It felt great to know where I was and not rely on the phone.
Angela delivered an edit of images to Kristen, who said they were exactly what she was looking for, and slotted them for the May issue. In addition to learning about the power of pitching stories, Angela learned to love Copenhagen and says that “Danish people truly are the happiest people in the world.”
