Since graduating from the Munich Academy of Photo Design in 1995, architectural photographer Elias Hassos has worked for a variety of magazines and journals including Vogue, National Geographic, and brand eins. Over the last few years, Elias has also been commissioned by Architectural Digest Germany. During a recent assignment for the publication’s September 2022 issue, Elias captured the ornate beauty of a centuries-old home in Austria — newly renovated by the British designer Tom Bartlett of Waldo Works.
Dating back to the second half of the 19th century, the home was originally a hunting lodge and was gradually expanded over time. The home was furnished by New York interior designer Valerian Stux Rybar in the 1970s, but needed some love and attention once again. Designer Tom Bartlett began renovating the home’s interior seven years ago and has revamped the property room by room since then. What started as a bathroom repair due to water damage, turned into a complete revamping of the property’s interior.
Thomas Skroch and Inka Baron from AD Germany managed the production and helped with styling and arranging. Designer Tom Bartlett was also present during the shoot. The team enjoyed spending a night at the property, giving them the opportunity to photograph twice, once in the evening and once in the morning. The beauty and opulence of the property made the assignment feel “like a vacation.”
It’s always great teamwork and fun to work out motif by motif. It was interesting that each room had its own character and style. Overall, an inspiring mix of heirlooms, art and design.
Since the property is very large, it was important to us to be able to put everything in relation to each other. We then always start with the walk-through and roughly decide which rooms and locations we want to photograph at which time of day. Despite the plan, however, there is always enough room for spontaneous changes.
Designer and architect Tom Bartlett founded Waldo Works in London ten years ago, a studio known for its modern sensibility and British touch. With his two partners, interior designer Sasha von Meister and architect Andrew Treverton, he tackles a wide range of projects all over the world, from interiors to architecture, products, and custom furnishings. In addition to co-founding Waldo Works, Tom works as a consultant for Yoo, where he designs large-scale residences and hotels.
Due to Elias’ experience, he knows what settings to use when he shoots, so post-production did not require much editing.
I do most of the image editing myself, and it’s important to me that the images look natural.
Based in Munich, Elias has the privilege of working around the world as a free-lance photographer for magazines and journals. He’s also concluded several art projects of his own which are presented in galleries and museums.
