Austin, Texas-based photographer Buff Strickland recently worked with Saatva to create a gallery of images for their new luxury line of bedding and pillows, Saatva Dreams. Working with Subdivision Locations, Buff found homes around the city that fit the aesthetic and then reached out directly to model agencies to find the talent for the project.
How did you establish the creative direction for these images?
The Creative Director at Saatva and his team had inspiration shots that they were working with. Some of the product shots were pretty specific, while others we discussed and I came up with creative ideas before and during the shoot. The team was really awesome and open to ideas.
We shot over the course of four days in two locations here in Austin. One day was dedicated to video. I was on hand the video day as well to work with the director to provide continuity between our shoots and to shoot a few stills and a cinemagraph. We shot a lot of images over those days, some with talent and some stills. Sheets are pretty challenging to style and our stylist Stephanie Bohn has a lot of experience styling beds, which is one of the reasons I wanted to work with her.
What were the shoots like?
We had a lot of shots to get done over the course of the day, beds to set up, break down, overhead shots that required a great deal of height and sets on multiple floors of the homes. The client wanted a very specific style of platform bed and we couldn’t find it anywhere in town so our producer Susan found someone to custom make it for us. It was beautiful but weighed a ton! It had to go with us to both locations and out onto a roof deck at the second location. It was quite an undertaking but looked beautiful in the shots!
What has the reaction to the images been so far?
The shoot went really well. The client was so happy and couldn’t believe how many images we were able to get done.
