Recently, Chris Sorensen decided to test out some new equipment and a few new techniques and the result was truly spectacular! He headed out to Bushwig, a drag festival in New York, and captured the spirit of the event with these engaging, fabulous and colorful portraits.
I typically shoot travel and documentary, almost exclusively with natural light, and editorial portraiture, which is often lit but much more planned than this story which was fast moving and in the moment.
Chris knows how important it is to continuing growing as a photographer and relishes these kinds of personal projects.
While I love working for clients, the reality is you don’t always get hired to shoot everything you want to shoot or how you want to shoot it. So for me, work like this is a way to keep myself happy, motivated and challenged.
The drag community loved the images! After having spent the weekend shooting the event, I thought it might be something New York magazine’s THE CUT might be interested in so I reached out to them, they were excited about the series and picked up the story for their website.
When asked what he learned through this project Chris replied:
The biggest lesson ends up being: get out there and shoot. It seems like every time I make the effort to do something new or that I’m passionate about, good things happen.
