Bishop Briggs is making a name for herself. Originally from London and now based in LA, Bishop is an up-and-coming musician who is moving to the top of the charts with singles like “Wild Horses,” which was featured in an Acura commercial, and “River,” which went all the way to number 1 on Hype Machine’s Popular Charts. Chances are you’ve already heard her (even if you don’t know it), but if not, go ahead and look her up. You won’t regret it. When New York photographer Chad Kamenshine first heard Bishop on the radio, he knew he had to work with her.
One of my friends had the radio on in his car and “Wild Horses” was playing. I asked : “Who is this?!?” He told me it was this new artist named Bishop and I hopped on Instagram to see what her vibe was like and immediately thought to myself we have to hang out and make some photos. That day, I reached out to her management and told them that I would love to collaborate on a photo story with her the next time she found her way to NYC.
Chad is no stranger to the music scene. In addition to being a music and celebrity photographer, he runs a blog, The Artistree, where he and other creatives share stories of the artists they collaborate with. Chad was excited to introduce Bishop on The Artistree. On the blog, he writes, “There may not be much out there about Bishop but take one listen to her music and you can start to peel back the layers of what makes her tick. The pulsating weight of past events, alongside her soulful vocals, comes at you like an anthemic confession to the world.”
The hardest part of Chad and Bishop’s collaboration was simply scheduling the initial shoot. Bishop was playing a show on a Monday in Brooklyn. Her team informed him that if Bishop had time in her schedule, they could possibly arrange something on Sunday. The following day came and Chad hadn’t heard anything. Determined to work with this rising star, Chad called her manager the next day. He asked for just thirty minutes before her show to discuss a potential collaboration. Chad Kamenshine went in with only his impression of Bishop’s style to guide the shoot.
The vibe of an artist’s work is a good jumping off point because it offers a peek into who their creative persona is. After listening to a track, I try to visualize how I see this person and make note of it. For example, if an artist creates dark and moody work, I might think about doing something that’s gelled with a cinematic feel to it. Their fashion style and personality play a big role as well.
Chad nailed the shoot, and instantly developed a friendship with Bishop in the process. They plan to continue to collaborate. Then on their second collaboration, they teamed up again when Bishop performed on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and invited Chad to join her backstage for the day.
It meant a lot to share the experience with Bishop and her team. They’re all amazing people and it felt like being with family.
Chad’s images appear on The Artistree, across social media platforms, and on The Tonight Show.
Her fans took to them and they were all over social pretty quickly. Nothing makes me more fulfilled than when a fan base gets excited about the photos.
