Chona Kasinger is a Seattle, Washington-based photographer who was recently contacted by Glamour to photograph CurlFest 2018. In its fifth success ul year, the event took place in Brooklyn last month and gathered over 25,000 people together in a celebration of naturally curly hair. Although Chona had a previously existing relationship with Glamour, this July was her first time covering CurlFest.
With projects like this that are sort of more a photojournalistic style – did you work side-by-side throughout the day with the journalist who did all these interviews?
I did. Together, we determined who to approach. In the past, I’ve done interviewing myself, but was nice to focus on the photo end on this project. Admittedly, it helps warming up to the subject by conducting a quick interview in advance, but in this case everyone was super down to chat and be photographed which made things easy.
What was it like to have only a day of shooting to capture the essence of this event?
My editors did a great job of briefing me and the team. There wasn’t a ton of pre-production on this– we just dove right in and were not disappointed.
