Darren Setlow recently finished up an editorial commission for The Knickerbocker Group and Maine Home + Design. The latter is a longtime client of Darren’s and the New Englander has worked with the former before, so familiarity wasn’t an issue on any front.
This story was shot as a feature of my longtime clients, The Knickerbocker Group. I have worked for the magazine Maine Home + Design before as well. It’s really rewarding to be able to photograph a client’s project as an editorial commission.
Since Darren is on the same page as the people at Knickerbocker, he gets a ton of creative freedom while on assignment for them. The house, a “quintessentially Maine Coast spot,” allows for some breathtaking shots that make the viewer want to check out the area.
The pitch revolved around the remodeling of an antique property that was one of several projects for a Knickerbocker client. I have a lot of creative freedom in photographing Knickerbocker’s projects since we have a very similar visual style, and I work very closely with their team.
The editor gave us some direction about the specific views she wanted to feature in the article and then trusted us to carry out the shoot.
When I asked Darren to list his favorite shots, he was ready with a host of answers. The reasoning behind his choices centered around the owner’s aesthetic and how the house itself looked next to the water.
One of my favorite shots is the one below, which illustrates the owner’s personal style.
I really like that composition. I also like this one below because it really illustrates the setting and how the property relates to the ocean.
Not only were both clients pleased with Darren’s work, the home’s owner wanted the images as well for a decidedly unique reason. Based on how the images look, the reason makes perfect sense.
Both the magazine and the design/build firm were very happy with the images. And the owner asked to use them for a fundraising silent auction where she was offering a stay at the house to winning bidders.
