David W. Johnson: Google Apps for Work

BY 25 October 2017
Published, Photographer Spotlight

In an ever-changing world with plenty of options available, Google continues to be the king of online resources. When the search engine giant needed promotional material highlighting how its G Suite, formally known as Apps For Work, helps small businesses, creative agency Upshot reached out to Chicago-based photographer David Johnson for the job.

After having worked on a project for Google in the past, David knows how to deliver the style of images the team expects to receive. For this project, it was David’s responsibility to visually integrate how the day-to-day business works, highlight the personality of the business owners, and to show how Google apps can multiply the company’s efforts and help their employees enhance productivity.

Before the shoot, Upshot connected with multiple local businesses in the Chicago area. David condensed this list down to only a few that would make for visually interesting images. With having just a few days to complete the actual shoot, David had to find a flexible crew that was willing to work in two to three locations in a span of one day.

The shoot itself was a great experience. It was fast-paced and took place over two and a half days in the offices where people work, during their regular operating hours. Trying his best not to be disruptive while the subjects were working, David still needed to intervene at times to get the shot he wanted. This was difficult to do since these aren’t professional models or people who usually work on shoots. So, he had to use his people skills and explain what he was looking for in a friendly way so they could work together and have it be a win-win experience for everyone involved.

As the shoot took place, David tethered his images to an iPad which he looked through after shooting at each location. Once the project completely wrapped, David passed the files to the client.

What I really enjoyed was getting an understanding of what that project is and figuring out how to tell the story.

It was essential for David to delve into and understand each business he photographed to create original well-executed photos.  Luckily, this is something that David loves about his job. For a day, he gets to dip into the world of an app developer, a pie baker, or a fashion designer and experience what a day in the life is like for these people.

In the end, the images turned out great, and the client was pleased. These photos are being used online on Googles Apps for Work website. This project has also lead to David landing other similar projects for the future.
