A few months ago, Philadelphia-based sports and lifestyle commercial photographer Chris Sembrot was sent to HQ Nightclub, the late-night hot spot at Revel Resort in Atlantic City, to shoot an up and coming young star for Billboard Magazine.
With over 400,000 Twitter followers, 17-year-old DJ Martin Garrix is well on his way to stardom. Atlantic City was his fourth city in four nights, a part of his current worldwide tour, and Billboard reached out to Chris looking for his unique use of lighting on set.
When Chris’s original hope to use a smoke machine didn’t pan out, he befriended the club contact to make use of the club lights and confetti cannons instead. Because what better prop for a nightclub shoot than a confetti canon?
Chris got the call on a Friday at 5:30 pm and was shooting by that Sunday at 10 pm, so minimal planning was involved. Although he thoroughly enjoyed the shoot and came out with great images, Chris said that neither he nor any of his crew attended the 2-3:30 AM show, saying he “feels old just admitting that.”
