Photographer Jean Allsopp first met writer Lynn Nesmith when the two worked at Southern Living magazine. Recently, they collaborated on 30A Living, a coffee table book depicting the quaint homes that line one of Florida’s most scenic routes.
This isn’t the first time the two have covered 30A; a couple of years ago, Jean and Lynn teamed up on 30A Style, which was well-received. With 30A Living, they focused on nine scenic towns along the state road, including Santa Rosa Beach, Seaside, and Alys Beach. Altogether, eighteen delightful coastal properties were featured, and Jean sought to create images that would attract anyone who’s dreamed of owning beachfront property.
Lynn handled several of the pre-production elements, including scheduling and meeting with designers. Shooting the project took a long time, but Jean and Lynn have done this sort of thing before. They’re a great team and accustomed to working together.
The only challenges Jean faced were choosing between which gorgeous properties to photograph and being at the mercy of the whims of the weather. With so many attractive homes, Jean strove to showcase a blend of styles. And while the weather was out of her control, Jean was able to flawlessly execute plenty of blue-sky shots.
There was a lot to smile about over this assignment, but Jean’s favorite part was meeting the people behind the houses. She loves interacting with the homeowners, interior designers, and architects, and hearing about their experiences living and working on 30A. In return, area locals have been delighted to meet Jean as well and are thrilled by the exposure the book has given their beautiful region of the gulf coast.
We have a had a great response, people who know the area are very excited about 30A Living.
Not only has the book received tons of positive reception from coastal residents, but several magazines have given it glowing reviews as well, including Birmingham Home & Garden and Southern Home. Recently, one of Jean’s images was featured on the cover of Birmingham Magazine.
In a few years, Jean hopes to work again with Lynn on the third installment of their 30A books. The coastal landscape is constantly transforming as new homes are constructed, and Jean and Lynn plan to keep up with the new additions. Not only do they enjoy working together, but Jean also loves this region of Florida.
If you haven’t been to this part of Florida, you should try to visit! The town of Seaside is charming and the Gulf has the most beautiful water!
