It just feels good to be inside an old building that has been restored, refurbished, and refreshed for years and years of future use. Decrepit, rundown buildings that house nothing are never fun to look at, but constantly knocking places down without attempting to renovate them is equally sucky. That’s part of what makes the farmers market Jody Horton has been shooting so cool — it’s a large part of one of San Antonio’s greatest restorative achievements. To celebrate the fact that these farmers have been selling their goods for more than ten years at what was a brewery, Jody visited a number of participating farmers at their homes.
The market celebrated its 10-year anniversary in May of 2019. A project to document member farms was initiated by the Pearl as part of an effort to celebrate this milestone. This is a long-term and ongoing project — it’s currently on hold [because of COVID-19] but I hope we’ll be able to continue it soon.
For some context, this redevelopment project was one of the largest and most successful in San Antonio history and included restoration of several historic buildings that were once the HQ of operations for Pearl brand beer.
Jody’s work is set to show up all over the Pearl Farmers Market online platform, and this isn’t the first time he’s worked with the former brewery.
My shots will appear on website, social, collateral, and press releases. I have done work with the Pearl including images for Hotel Emma in the past. The hotel is housed in the historic main brewery building.
However, most of Jody’s deliverables this time around took him to the area farms as opposed to the main farmer’s market. Hopefully, when things open back up, he can revisit the market and continue to get quality imagery of these wonderful people.
We worked with the Pearl farm contact to determine best seasons time for various farms. Each was a separate drive/shoot day and productions were about 2-3 hours. I love following and documenting processes and have spent a lot of time on farms doing just that.
It’s always a pleasure spending time with people who are passionate about what they do.
