Nissan has been working with Tokyo-based photographer John Enos for nearly 15 years, and they don’t see an end to their joint ventures any time soon. John first sought out an opportunity with Nissan while living in Barcelona, and has continued to collaborate with them through his major relocation to Japan. He says while a lot has changed with location and modern campaign directives, getting back on a shoot with Nissan always feels like reuniting with family.
John began working with Nissan back in 2001, when he found himself stuck in Paris due to canceled flights. He happened to have his portfolio with him and took the delay as an opportunity to go visit their agency. The rest is history.
For this particular project, John worked with an art director from Nissan to make sure they were accurately showcasing different models and the ways they could be used. This shoot was being used for the Launch Catalog of their latest lightweight commercial van, so the art director made sure to fully lay out each shot in advance.
Aside from the compositions of the shots, there was still a lot more planning to be done before the photos could be taken. Finding locations was hard, considering the scenery they were looking for needed to have good, natural lighting both indoors and out. John also expressed that planning for places such as construction sites was nearly impossible since they are in a constant state of change. When it came time to choosing talent, John did a five-minute test shoot with each person to ensure that they would work well together.
Once they finally managed the schedules, and waited for ideal weather days to match up, the actual shoot went great and has been well received.
The reaction has been very encouraging, especially in Japan, where it’s rare to mix commercial car photography with people. Usually it’s something reserved more for editorial content.
John has already been working on two more projects with Nissan, and they will be debuting soon – the next one in Mexico!
