Back in 2006, Grand Junction, Colorado-based photographer Ken Redding was first approached by the ad agency for Royal Resorts of Cancun, the Communique Group, to photograph their new Royal Haciendas. Since then, Ken has returned several times to the luxury resorts to capture the truly unique and relaxing atmospheres the company is so well known for, most recently in August.
Although the hundred-degree days were strenuous, the shoot itself went smoothly. Ken first went to the location to do some tech scouting, followed later by three action-packed production days. The goal was to capture all aspects of The Grand Residences luxury resort life. Ken had a tall order on his gourmet plate. He had the task of serving up a plethora of images. These images were to be used for the company’s website, magazine, and general marketing needs. From food to style, relaxation to adventure, and every detail of hospitality in between.
Because this was an international shoot for Ken, the in-house production team became an invaluable resource for his work. Royal Resorts provided two assistants. They also provided the lighting and grip equipment. This made traveling light across borders a breeze.
One of the nice things about shooting on resort properties is that everything is so contained. Very little, if any transit between sets and everything in the way of props, food, rooms, can be pulled on a moment’s notice.
Ken was also thankful for the detailed creative direction, with the allowance of his input on each shot. He was able to maintain the schedule. He also picked up the “unexpected” shots. These shots rounded out a fully realized campaign for the resort. The clients are already looking to him for future projects.
Hands down, my favorite part of this and past projects for this client was working with their team; delightful people who are really fun and nice, including all of the talent. I always like maintaining a fun and festive atmosphere on my shoots whenever I can, because I believe it translates to the overall outcome and look of the photos. Resort life is supposed to be fun and relaxing, so that’s what we’re going for!
