January is over, we’ve officially rung in the new year and many photographers have their marketing strategies on their minds again. Here at Wonderful Machine, we know that any time is a good time to start a new routine, especially when it comes to marketing your work.
Recently, Atlanta-based fashion and beauty photographer Leah Perry contacted our marketing department about putting together a Client List Build— a custom consulting service where we would create a small list (40-60) of appropriate clients for Leah. This list would include contact information like email addresses and phone numbers, which are essential when reaching out to clients. Leah’s list build was a bit unique— she provided us with her current list of contacts so we could do additional research and make sure those clients were still at the same company and make any necessary updates. This ensured that we wouldn’t duplicate companies or contacts and that we would be building on her efforts instead of replicating them.
Once the build for Leah was complete, we took it one step further and decided to do a Marketing Plan with her new list. This is a fairly new service here at WM, where we come up with a customized marketing plan for the photographer and implement it for them. In Leah’s case, we sent emails to the contacts on her list that weren’t in the Atlanta area, either reminding them of her work or introducing her work. For the contacts in her area, we sent emails with requests for portfolio meetings. We followed up on these emails with a phone call.
We were so excited to receive a handful of email responses from contacts within the Atlanta area and outside of it with fantastic feedback about Leah and her work. Some of these clients had worked with Leah in the past and others were already familiar with her work. My favorite response was “we’re fans [of Leah] for life.” Now that’s a quality recommendation!
After we finished following up with Leah’s contacts, we felt good about the quality connections we made for her and her work. We had updated her current client contact list with pertinent information and added some “fresh blood” to give her a quality 50+ contacts around the country that were appropriate for her to work with this year. Having her name in the back of creatives’ minds gives her a better chance of being called for assignments, and we know Leah is very diligent about following up with contacts throughout the year which will keep the momentum going for 2015.
