Indonesia-based photographer Martin Westlake has been a regular contributor to DestinAsian Magazine, having completed a number of travel features and covers for the magazine since their inception in 2001. Martin traveled to Sri Lanka with DestinAsian’s Editor-in-Chief Chris Hill to scout and photograph several selections for the cover.
The cover was shot at Cape Weligama as it was the closest property to Colombo (where the stylist is based), and Galle Fort (where the model is from).
Prior to departure Chris had Google/Instagram searched possible locations on the property where we were going to shoot – on arrival at the resort in the afternoon I scouted each location and worked out a schedule and production plan with Chris.
The key to the brief was to give a tropical ‘islands’ lifestyle feel to the shot with an emphasis on the amazing location/environment. The elevated infinity pool with its stunning palm trees + views best matched this brief and was chosen as the priority shot.
The model + stylist were hired for one morning only, so it was a very tight shoot schedule. They arrived the night before the shoot which gave us an opportunity to go over the concept, wardrobe, and styling.
The cover image was shot just after sunrise – luckily for us the weather was good and the orientation of the sun provided enough illumination of the model.
