Matt Odom: Profiles of Poverty

BY Wonderful Machine 17 March 2015
Published, Photographer Spotlight

Matthew Odom recently got involved with a project profiling poverty in his home state of Georgia. For Matt, this is a way of addressing the so-called “elephant in the room” that is poverty, and hopefully raising awareness about the issue.

Matthew was contacted by a local philanthropist, Jeff Batcher, and was thrilled to get started on the project:

Having a degree in Human Services, these kinds of projects are near and dear. They gave me free reign so I decided to focus on one of the local shelters here in the city called Daybreak. I got a chance to talk about everything with these gentlemen and they even offered me encouraging words.

Not only was the project fun for Matt, he emphasized that his subjects were intelligent and very well spoken.

The photos are on exhibit at Mercer University this month, and the local government has begun to look into funding, grants and initiatives to help right poverty.
