Boulder, Colorado-based photographer Matt Trappe was approached by Bicycling Magazine to photograph portraits of two riders for a feature story in the August 2018 issue. The photo director at the magazine reached out to him after seeing his recent athlete portrait work on Instagram, and Matt was hired for the assignment.
The goal was to match the portraits of the two riders to create parallels to the larger story. I first flew to Austin, TX to shoot with Ian. Being the author of the story it was great to hear the full story directly from him and match the tone of the writing to the portraits we shot. Then I took the look/feel of those portraits and shot the same with Mike Friedman in Boulder. Like many projects, we had quick deadlines to meet so coordinating schedules and fitting last-minute travel into the budget was a challenge. The final layout of the story matched perfectly to the black backdrop of the portraits and made for a great visual to match the story.
