Los Angeles-based photographer Oriana Koren struck up a friendship with San Francisco Magazine‘s Karen Williams through an initial Instagram exchange. One year later, Karen contacted Oriana for an assignment when she visited San Francisco in February. Oriana was to photograph Nyum Bai, a Cambodian street food restaurant run by chef and owner Nite Yun in Oakland’s Fruitvale neighborhood. Fruitvale is home to a diverse community but is gentrifying quickly.
It was the perfect assignment. I’m most interested in using my lens to create visibility for women and people of color in the food industry and this assignment allowed me to do both!
