Print Edit: A Portfolio for Rolando Diaz

BY Sean Stone 22 December 2014
Travel Intel, Case Studies, Photo Editing, Print Edit

Last Winter, We traded the brutal Philadelphia cold for a few days in sun-drenched Miami. There, we met with local photographer Rolando Diaz. Rolando had just joined Wonderful Machine and discussed improving his profile and help us market his work. He asked us about the value of a print portfolio, which he had never felt a need for up to that point. We told him what we tell all photographers: no, a book will never get as many eyeballs as your website. However, you should not show up with a laptop if you are meeting clients in person.

Later that year, Rolando was ready for us to get started on a Print Edit. He sent us several hundred examples of his recent travel work, including a recent shoot in Thailand.

A global tour, via curated photo edits for Rolando Diaz

Travel work can be tricky to edit as it tends to cover a lot of ground within a single specialty. Food, portraiture, architecture, social documentary, and landscape are all elements of a travel story. It is important to decide on a plan of attack on how the work will be sequence. For Rolando, we decided to organize the images based on region. We used the mood of each location to keep a steady flow. The book begins in Asia before taking a turn to tropical southern Florida, then to Canada, Northern Europe, and the Mediterranean. This way we were able to show Rolando’s multifaceted approach and take the viewer on a tour of the globe!

After the edit, we recommended Rolando print with Asukabook. We love their printing and thought they were a good fit for Rolando’s format – allowing for full-bleed pages with minimal cropping. Our Senior Designer, Melissa, took the reigns from there, prepping Rolando’s files and laying the book out to Asuka’s specifications. The final result is gorgeous and really helps Rolando put his best foot forward.
