Photo Editing: A Transition for Inti St. Clair

BY Wonderful Machine 30 April 2014
Lifestyle, Portraiture Intel, Case Studies, Photo Editing, Print Portfolio Production, Web Edit

Inti St. Clair recently approached us about making some changes, as she was poised for some major shifts in her business: a move away from stock towards more assignments, and a move from Seattle to St. Louis! Inti’s been a WM member for a long time. We enjoy her work and always love chatting with her, so of course, we were excited to work with her on a web edit and print portfolio.

Inti already had solid branding and a nicely designed site, so we were able to focus on editing right away. Like so many photographers, she was having a hard time deciding what it made sense to show, as her goals had gradually become more focused. While it was clear on her site that she was a skilled lifestyle photographer, her edit needed to do more to emphasize to clients that she is a seasoned, specialized shooter.

From our early conversations, we knew that Inti wanted to make sure that the work we presented was “emotionally driven, happy, fun, and positive.” She also wanted to be sure to include enough portraits to show skill, without steering attention away from her lifestyle work. Our solution was to create categories that were all different faces of her varied approach, from travel and kids to more corporate and industrial. We came up with play, live, grow, and work. The more ethereal categories helped to emphasize the emotional component of her work, and left room for portraits which complimented her mainly lifestyle portfolio.

With the web edit complete, I got to work on the print portfolio. Inti had been without a book for a long time, using an iPad for meetings. So we started from scratch, planning on printing through the good folks at Asuka. Inti’s book was a fun process, and the format really lent itself nicely to create that upbeat vibe that we were going for with both edits. I used a combination or paired horizontals and more intricate spreads to create energetic stories, and build a nice flow to the portfolio.

Inti was very pleased with both edits, and was ready to hit the ground running in a new city!
