Photo Editing: Farewell To The Old, Bidwell To The New

BY Sean Stone 1 February 2013
Intel, Case Studies, Photo Editing, Print Portfolio Production, Web Edit

Julie Bidwell is a portrait, travel and food photographer based in West Hartford, CT. Shortly after joining Wonderful Machine, she contacted me about refreshing her website and print portfolio. Like many successful editorial shooters, she was eager to update and refine her presentation to attract more national advertising clients.

After a bit of discussion, we agreed that her current branding and Photofolio website were already strong and supporting her brand, so we blazed forward with the web edit. Considering the breadth of her work, and the clients she planned on pursuing, I decided to keep the organization simple. I separated her work in four categories: food, portraiture, travel, and a gallery of new documentary-style work focused on farm-to-table food labeled “stories.” After some back and forth on the web edit with Julie, we eventually agreed on a final draft and moved on to her print portfolio.

Working roughly from my selections for the website, I put together a single book which paired travel, portrait, food, and selections from the documentary projects into one handy “hospitality” volume—perfect for meetings with any of Julie’s likely clients. Julie and I discussed a few printing options, but to me, her style was begging for a lay-flat book from Asuka. Julie agreed, and produced a copy for herself, and a second for us to keep in-house at Wonderful Machine.

Julie was very pleased with the finished products, and was able to hit the ground running with a sleek, elegant look!
