Web Edit: Julien McRoberts

Photographer Julien McRoberts recently made a big move from her long-time home in New Mexico to NYC. With the move came the opportunity to take another look at her website and refresh her Web Edit. In addition to being a great photographer, Julien is also a fantastic person who is lovely to work with so it was my pleasure to edit and sequence her four main galleries: interiors, travel, portraits, and lifestyle.

Although Julien has adapted to life in the big city, her southwest roots are still a strong part of who she is professionally and personally. With that in mind, one of the goals of this edit was to reconcile her portfolio to the new market she was in while still maintaining her core brand. The other goal was to give Julien a foundation to build from–as a frequent traveler, she’s continuously shooting new projects in envious locales and producing new work.

We decided to start with interiors as it’s some of her strongest work. Her home and garden photography showcases her attention to detail as a photographer and so I was conscious of finding a balance between the wide shots with the tighter, detailed ones.

Two photographs by Julien McRoberts of a sculpture hand opening a door and a long arched corridor
Home and garden photography showing a long porch with several benches
Four photographs; wall art with the word love, a woman lounging in a bright room, a blue rustic door, and a porch overlooking the ocean

Travel was next in line, which was the most time intensive gallery not only because she has so much material to draw from, but also because travel is such an integral part of what she does. Julien approaches her travel work with a more documentary style that allows her to capture the character of a place while still giving it a commercial appeal.

Three photographs; an Elvis impersonator in a car, a neon motel sign, and a close-up of a Mexican license plate
Two photographs; an old man in a hat and two people in a door way with a donkey
Three photographs; small dolls, colorful flags, and a woman dancing

From there we moved on to portraits, which is an evolving specialty for Julien. Her overall aesthetic is moving toward environmental portraits that have a bit more grit than the rest of her work.

An image of a shirtless man leaning his elbow on the door of a vintage car
three portraits side by side; woman smiling at the camera (left), man smiling while looking off in the distance (center), and a closeup of. a snake on a man's head

We concluded the series with lifestyle. As a jet-setter, Julien does a lot of work with resorts, and the images are made for a solid gallery.

lifestyle photography showing a family walking together (left) and a young man making a sand angel (right)
lifestyle photography of a young girl sledding while her family watches
aerial photography showing a woman posing with her arms over her head, while floating in a pool
a woman in a hammock, a woman in a mud bath, and two people receiving a massage

At the end of the process, I was thoroughly jealous of Julien’s travel-filled lifestyle but very happy that I was able to create an edit that emphasized her specialties as a cohesive body of work.
