Vivien Allender is a fashion photographer who originally hails from Melbourne, Australia. In her teen years, she lived in Japan and after traveling through several parts of the world, she has found herself settled in New York.
When Vivien approached us, her website was a bit stuck in the past. She was still shooting for many clients overseas but was looking to gain more high-end retail work in the US. Her edits were showing a handful of different things–film and digital, studio and location, old and new. Many of the images and tearsheets were noticeably outdated. That, paired with the lack of branding on her website, made it clear that she needed a refresh. We decided to move forward with a web portfolio edit. Diving into this process, our goal was to maintain Vivien’s minimalist style with the addition of some more personality and overall sleekness.
Vivien originally had her galleries separated into studio, location, accessories, kids and personal. I knew that we’d be cutting back on many of her images to better spell out the direction she wanted to move in, so I found it more sufficient to simplify that list to fashion, kids and personal.
Although she’s filtering it out slowly, Vivien does find herself occasionally shooting film for fashion assignments. A common challenge we faced while organizing her images was making her more soft and subtle film work compatible with the high contrast and crispness of her digital shots. In order to consolidate studio and location work, we used elements such as color and lighting to sequence them properly. We made sure to adjust and color-correct the film images we did use in order to keep them in tune with the rest of the gallery.
Originally, Vivien was showing about 75 fashion images in her portfolio. We narrowed them down to a solid 30. Those 30 images show the different skills she’s able to execute as a fashion photographer while also giving an overall clean and light feel to her website. It almost felt as if we cleaned out a closet of clothing — rid of the old, hung up the new, and made room for all of the incoming additions.
