Print Mailer: More Than a Hobby

BY Wonderful Machine 21 February 2014
Intel, Wonderful Machine News, Published, Wonderful Machine News

This February, we spent a lot of time inside. The 50+ inches of snow and bitterly cold temperatures that slammed the East Coast region made for limited activity options. Because everyone has their winter methods (Elyse started crocheting in the office!), we were inspired to use this conceptual image by Bologna, Italy-based photographer Francesco Ridolfi for our February print mailer (printed by Modern Postcard); going out to all those folks like us who love photography as More Than a Hobby.

Francesco gave us a bit of background on the image:

The image is part of a series of diptychs I made as a personal project. The general idea was to portray each person as a sort of superhero athlete (the classic iconography around this world) in the first shot on the left, and then, in the second photo on the right, try to completely turn the vision of him/her inside out with a funny weird portrait that could explain the sport’s clothing or some details of the first epic portrait. (For example, the fencing mask and the knitting tools explain the scar on the face of the first photo.)

So, the people I worked with were not real sport athletes, but just models or characters, with the right feeling and treats to convey the story behind them. Almost all the characters of the series have been shot in studio and later added on a background plate I had previously shot.
