Print Mailers: We Know a Guy

BY Wonderful Machine 29 March 2012

By Peter Clark

Spring has sprung here in Philadelphia and there’s no better way to celebrate then with a picture of a naked man, dead in a hotel room. Printed by our friends at Modern Postcard and sent to 3,000 creatives across the US and Canada, this month’s image was provided by Atlanta-based photographer, John Fulton. Recently touted as one of Luerzer’s Archive‘s 200 Best Ad Photographers Worldwide, John has some experience in creating eye-catching and provocative work.

John was kind enough to fill us in on the concept behind his macabre image.

I call this image “Dead Man at the Ritz” since I captured it while on assignment photographing a Ritz Carlton in the Cayman Islands. After a day of shooting I found myself still up at 3 am and unable to sleep so I set up my camera and some lights to shoot the opulent room, and this scene evolved. This is a wealthy patron who I always thought was probably caught having an affair by his wife or someone’s husband.  It could also be someone who was robbed or overdosed after a long night of partying.  It’s a little open to interpretation but, there was a scuffle in the room and this man ended up dead on the floor. Sometimes boredom and insomnia combine with a camera for interesting results.
