Print & Web Edit: New Portfolios for Lauryn Ishak

BY Sean Stone 11 May 2015
Food/Drink, Hospitality, Travel Intel, Case Studies, Photo Editing, Print Edit, Web Edit

Singapore-based photographer Lauryn Ishak worked with us on a print portfolio several years ago. The results looked great, and as time marches on, Lauryn has been seriously busy! Since that print edit, she’s moved a few times, got married, and shot countless assignments. After all of that, she reached out to us and said she was ready for a new website and a refreshed print portfolio. While the first book was aimed at editorial travel clients, she wanted to switch angles and build an online and print portfolio that spoke to more commercial, hospitality clients.

Having a more targeted direction in mind was vital with the volume of work Lauryn made available to us. She sent about 1,000 beautiful pictures, all of which were honestly strong enough for a portfolio. We carefully evaluated the work, trying to strike a balance between food, hospitality, and travel, all with an eye for higher-end editorial and commercial clients. Here’s what her website looked like before we started:

When working on both a website and a print book, we typically begin the process with the web edit. This will inevitably contain more work which can then be pared down and tweaked for the print portfolio. In Lauryn’s case, I suggested she make her font larger and divide her portfolio into four main categories plus a tear sheets section. I kept these sections short and sweet; my goal was to create a teaser that would leave prospective clients wanting more. Here’s what her new site looks like:

The print portfolio edit was a continuation of the same process. The challenge was to restructure the work from the website into a single book with a coherent flow. We used elements of each category, pairing images with similar color palettes and travel themes. When the edit was completed, we worked with Adorama to print loose images, which we then loaded into Lauryn’s existing binding and plastic sleeves. See pictures of her updated print portfolio below:

Lauryn was very pleased with both edits:

It’s always great working with Sean because after a few edits together, he knows my thought process and my work. He knows what I’m looking for and always comes up with edits that surprise me. It’s nice to see a different perspective of my work that I hadn’t considered before. The outcome is always stunning!
