Rancho Margarita, CA-based photographer Erik Isakson came to Wonderful Machine looking for help with editing two new web galleries for his website. He is well-regarded as a sports lifestyle photographer and he sought to expand his client base so he shared some tech and automotive work with us. After an initial call and review of the work, we determined that his automotive work was strong but needed more variety to effectively market to that industry segment, so we decided to focus on editing his tech lifestyle work for this project edit.
We began with a collection of nearly 300 images, and after some discussion, we agreed that Erik would send a smaller set of 150 or so of his selects for me to work from. In keeping with the layout of his existing website, we agreed to arrange the final edit in a masonry layout in which multiple images in the gallery are seen at once. Knowing this, I went into the project edit with the goal of not only selecting the strongest images from the tech lifestyle category but integrating them in such a way as to make the entire gallery block of images look cohesive.
When we think of technology and computers, a general aesthetic comes to mind, that of the black, white, and blue color palette which is synonymous with the light glow and contrast of a computer screen. Much of Erik’s work was already comprised of this look, and in my edit and layout of the gallery, I sought to emphasize this. The final edit came down to 41 images, and the gallery came to be molded with a gradient-like aesthetic which, on the whole, helped to bring all the individual images together into a common visual language. There is a great deal of stylistic variety in Erik’s repertoire, and with the final edit, we struck a strong balance between visual cohesion and the illustration of Erik’s breadth of technical and creative abilities.
