Los Angeles-based editorial and advertising photographer Robert Gallagher has been shooting editorial work for quite some time and is a professional in every sense of the word, learning to roll with the punches and adapt to whatever environment he may find himself in. Robert’s most recent cover for Forbes focuses on Sean Rad, co-founder of Tinder, the tremendously popular and cutting-edge app for online dating. He went into it with a high amount of ideas and a very short amount of time to shoot one killer cover:
It’s always somewhat of a tricky challenge to create an entire photo-studio in someone else’s workspace, one that’s high quality enough to grace the cover of a major newsstand magazine, all within a limited time frame.
Robert used his extensive experience and creative eye to work quickly while putting his subject at ease in order to get the perfect shot.
In the end, he nailed it, but not before some blood, sweat and tears:
It’s not exactly like working in a studio where your lighting, spacing and set-up have some consistency and familiarity. No, in this instance we basically have two hours to park, haul a studio up to the ninth floor, construct, concept, test, adjust, back-up concept, test, think, re-think, decide if you actually like the light or even the idea, sometimes start from scratch, hopefully have a cup of tea, enough to re-build your energy, cause guess what, in 10 minutes your subject is gonna arrive and you’ve gotta shoot a kick-ass cover. And oh yeah, he’s not someone who makes a living in front of a camera, so I’ve really gotta bring it, to get him to be there.
