In April 2019, Jacksonville, Florida-based photographer and FAA-licensed drone pilot Ryan Ketterman was contracted to shoot new imagery for JAXPORT, the Jacksonville Port Authority. About a year later, Ryan’s photos and videos from this shoot won six American Advertising Awards (also known as Addys) from the American Advertising Federation.
Ryan was hired by Amy Klinkenberg, the in-house art director for JAXPORT who was in charge of the company’s rebranding. The art director wanted new images to showcase the rebranding at JAXPORT’s annual conference, as well as for the company’s website and print advertising.
JAXPORT was in the midst of a rebrand and was looking to capture some fresh imagery for the brand launch. Through discussion, we thought it would be a great idea to also capture and create a video piece.
The shooting schedule included four days across various locations at JAXPORT’s three terminals, plus a couple of off-site locations. During the shoot Ryan was tasked with capturing content using several different types of equipment.
The biggest technical challenge was capturing stills, video, and drone back-to-back, which can be a bit disorienting when you’re moving fast.
In addition to the challenge of quickly switching equipment, Ryan was shooting outside in the elements. To get the aerial shots and drone footage, the photographer had to be aware of changing weather conditions.
We had a couple of days with severely strong winds, which made it a little more challenging shooting on the cranes and grounded the drone work until the wind had subsided.
Once all of the shots had been captured, there was still quite a lot of post-production work for Ryan to do, including video editing, time lapse rendering, and still image processing. By May 2019, Ryan had delivered the final imagery to JAXPORT.
I really enjoyed the whole project from start to finish. JAXPORT has been a great client for years, and we’ve built a lot of trust. They gave me a ton of creative freedom, and I ran with it.
Ryan used the photos and videos from this shoot to apply for several Addys. At the American Advertising Federation’s Gala in early spring, the photographer was informed that his submissions had won three Silver Local Addy’s for Still Photography, Cinematography, and Video Editing; a Gold District Addy for Still Photography; and two Gold Telly Awards for Cinematography and Aerial Cinematography. Ryan’s work can be found on JAXPORT’s website.
