Washington, D.C.-based editorial food photographer Scott Suchman recently shot the cover of the January issue of Washingtonian Magazine, along with an inside spread all about DC’s best restaurants. The issue has been particularly popular with readers, largely due to the successful collaboration between Scott and his crew.
I chatted with Scott about the project, and why he loves working with the Washingtonian:
The best thing about this feature, and the reason why I believe it is so successful and has been really enjoyed by the readership, is that is was a true team effort. I worked directly with the writers, editors and designers organizing and figuring out the shape of the feature before I shot even one frame. It was not a situation where they give you a list of things to shoot and you run off and then send them a ton of images to pick through. I worked directly with the lead designer and photo editor determining what to shoot on each page. It made it a lot harder, but was worth it in the end. I saw the layout as it grew and changed and that was so crucial to shooting a really comprehensive package. I have been working with Washingtonian since 2008 and, without a doubt, they represent the best professional relationship I’ve ever had in my 20-plus-years career in this city.
