Although Jacksonville, Fla.-based commercial photographer Ryan Ketterman has extensive light painting and night photography experience, he doesn’t shoot much of it these days due to his high focus on commercial work. So when he got the call from Rock My Image to shoot an assignment for Third Kind Beyond, a company that sells LED lights for skateboards, he was excited for something fresh and fun.
The shots had to happen at night, and although getting the product to create the light stream was no problem, getting the subjects sharp and not ghosted created a challenge for Ryan.
He overcame it, and quickly, as the pressure was on to get the shots before the skaters became too fatigued.
My favorite part of this shoot was being able to create colorful, action-oriented images. I pulled from my years of personal experience doing long exposure work and really had fun with this. I increased my tech knowledge a bit on this as well, learning how to sync the strobes with the action. – Ryan Ketterman
