Walter Glassof, an illustrator based out of France, recently collaborated with New York-based photographer Shaina Fishman. They aimed to create a series of images combining Shaina’s photos of dogs with humorous illustrations. In fact, Shaina had wanted to work on a photo/illustration project for many years. When she found Walter’s Instagram account, she knew he was the right fit for a collaboration.
I came across the Walter Glassof account on Instagram and really loved his work. Not only do I love the actual illustrations, but his sense of humor and wit in his work. I contacted him through Instagram asking if he wanted to collaborate.
Shaina frequently features images of juxtaposed animals or animal personalities next to each other throughout her portfolio and enjoys seeing each animal’s emotions play off each other. To do the same thing with illustrations, she needed to cultivate images that would lend themselves well to an accompanying inanimate illustration.
Prioritizing the project was the biggest hurdle Shaina and Walter faced, as it was a personal endeavor for both of them.
For me, it was finding the time to make the edit to send to Walter, and retouching the selected images. Walter, of course, created the illustrations, but was also busy juggling other projects. We kept in touch throughout the project asking/encouraging when each person’s part would be complete.
Seeing that Walter lives in France, the collaboration took place entirely through email and Shaina and Walter have never met. Despite this, they seamlessly collaborated to complete the project and are enjoying the final turnout!
I think we both really respect each other’s work, which has made this project and process so successful.
The images received a tremendous reaction. Both Shaina and Walter actively shared this project on their social media accounts. While this began as a personal project, they recently began to reach out to publishing companies. Their goal is to explore opportunities for publishing the images on greeting cards, calendars, and potentially even a book. The feedback they’ve received from publishing companies has been overwhelmingly positive. Additionally, they are both excited to see if the series will get picked up!
I’m usually pretty timid about asking people to collaborate, so I’m really happy I took a chance to message him and ask if he’d be interested in collaborating.
