Seattle-based food, lifestyle and travel photographer Shannon Douglas has had a marathon year. She’s been on a “whirlwind of a journey” entering the cookbook world, and has shot more than five cookbooks that are currently available for purchase. One of her favorite recent projects was shooting “Salads That Inspire,” a book that is filled with tons of recipes to help you enjoy healthy eating.
Shannon worked on the book with Rockridge Press, a cookbook and lifestyle publishing company that she works with often on DIY books.
This book is plentiful, vibrant, fresh and ingredient-focused. I like my food to be simple in approach but splashed with color and bright flavors so this project was right up my alley.
Shannon handled the styling and photography, and she loves the challenges that come with crafting the food the way she wants it to be shot. For her, being involved in every part of the process guarantees “fluidity and carrying over of an idea.” To prep for the production, Shannon scoured stores high and low for props, found inspiration in books with similar tones and subject matter and put together a large binder with resources, sketches, shot lists, lighting plans, recipes, mood boards and more.
So far, the books had a great response:
It holds a solid 5 star rating on amazon and has been written up and featured in various formats. Of my friends and family, this is by far the most popular book. It seamlessly presents ideas for healthy, balanced meals that are delicious and easy to make and incorporate into your daily routine. Not to mention the salads themselves are stunning!
As with any project, Shannon learned a number of things while working on the book.
This project in particular focused on a lot of minute details with fine-tuning small ingredients in styling. We also focused a lot on composing the shots to incorporate the text, so that can be a challenge and a gift to work with. And of course I learned a ton about salads! You will never be shy of ideas with this book.
