Los Angeles-based Fashion and Portraiture photographer Steven Simko recently completed a new editorial project for return client Los Angeles Magazine. Los Angeles Magazine is a print and digital publication that focuses on the lifestyle, culture, and news of California’s capital city. The project featured supermodel Angela Lindvall at the Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes for the magazine’s March 2024 issue.
Steven has completed six fashion stories for the client in the last six years.
LA Magazine found me originally through their previous AD in 2018. After many years of email promos with no replies, they contacted me kind of out of the blue for a Spring Fashion story, and we have continued to work together since.
Steven worked with producer Richard Villani and the magazine’s creative director Ada Guerin to piece together the right team for the project and the locations for the photoshoot.
The production, i.e., models, hair, makeup, and stylist, was handled by myself and Richard. We started looking for talent on January 4th. We had a location scout with Ada from the magazine the following week.
The original mood board for this story was “White Lotus” meets Slim Aarons, with the only certainty being we would be shooting at Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes, CA.
The location for the one-day shoot was a seaside luxury resort about an hour south of Los Angeles. Steven and the team had access to the resort and grounds.
The only problem we had was the weather. Leading into the day of shooting, it was raining pretty heavily, and we expected a break in the weather late morning — not guaranteed though. If it continued to rain, the owner of the 53’ Cadillac would not bring his car out for the opening spread shot, and we would have to shoot everything indoors.
Fortunately for Steven (and any classic car enthusiasts), the weather that day was ultimately clear enough for the outdoor shots he had planned!
Like any Crew specialty on a day of shooting, strong talent can truly elevate the project.
The talent we were able to cast were just amazing! Angela Lindvall was such a massive star in the late ’90s, and Ryan Porter was a last-minute game-changer. The professionalism of both of these models really shined! For one of the beachside shots, Angela got knocked down into the water by a wave and was right back up a moment later, ready to continue.
Another favorite memory for me was being able to drag my shutter in full sunlight and create a moment with a rushing wave around our model Ryan, who was able to stay completely still so I could capture the “wave” shot.
