After completing an editorial piece for Feast Magazine, Missouri-based photographer duo Starboard & Port found inspiration to undertake a personal project about the blueberry season at Persimmon Hill Farm.
Starboard & Port fell in love with the beautiful scenery at this Missouri farm, as well as the family that owned it. After one day of shooting blueberry muffins and shiitake sliders for an editorial project, they decided to return. They aimed to create a more extensive personal project specifically highlighting the farm’s blueberry season. They also used this as an opportunity to work with some new equipment and train new assistants.
The goal of the project was to create an image and video library that would be valuable for Persimmon Hill. However, they also wanted to use this as an opportunity to create a promotional piece that combined their stylized food photography and industrial stories with motion and stills.
The key part of pre-production was organizing schedules, as there was only a small window of time for peak blueberry picking. This made planning an exact date difficult to do. They meticulously assembled a detailed treatment outlining their vision for the shoot and their goals for the project. Subsequently, they forwarded it to the farm for approval. The farm got back to them with their needs and they coordinated everything together with food stylist Cari Price to create recipes and three storylines.
When it came time to shoot the project, they did everything in one day.
We photographed this project on the longest day of the year, and had an intense one day schedule. By the wrap cheers, we all were ready for a nap.
Shooting this project was a great experience for everyone involved. The outcome, including exceptional images and videos, delighted the family at the farm. On top of all the fun they had and all the great work they created, Starboard & Port used this personal project as an example for an advertising estimate which helped them land a new project.
When asked if there is anything else we should know about this project, they said:
When you find yourself in Lampe, Missouri, grab a Thunder Muffin at Persimmon Hill.
