Although Steve Boxall spent 14 hours on a shoot in the Florida sun for Solis Health Plans, he had small windows to grab key shots that Solis wanted—and worked through his time in the hot seat with the cool composure of a seasoned photographer. Steve collaborated with actor Andy Garcia, who starred in and directed the shoot, to produce these beautiful commercial photographs around the values of compassion, respect, responsibility, and community.
What was involved in planning/preproduction?
After being confirmed, a few days before shoot day, I had a brief conversation with the executive producer. He was knee-deep in pre-production and (understandably) couldn’t spare a me lot of time, so our talk was more of an “e-meet-and-greet” and a quick chat on my approach.
How did you approach this project?
Come shoot day I had prepared a fluid approach to shooting around a very large film crew. My team and I were ready to go during any spare time Andy had between directing and performing.
What were the shoots like?
It was a 14 hour day in the Florida Sun during September! We all worked our butts off! Andy stops traffic, literally he stopped traffic when we shot on Calle Ocho, the cops had to move people on.
Did you face any challenges with this project?
The main challenge was the amount of time that Andy could give me. I had to nail the main print campaign shots for Solis in 15 minutes, I did it in 10! I overcame this by being prepared and planning ahead.
