Presence Health knows it takes more than extensive experience, impressive credentials and advanced technology to deliver the best possible health care. Presence was founded in 2011 when two long-established Catholic health systems, Provena Health and Resurrection Health Care, came together to form one of the largest integrated health systems in Illinois. This hybrid system knows it takes people who care about you, your needs, opinions and your loved ones to set them apart. The doctors, nurses, techs, housekeepers, food service workers, chaplains, volunteers, office staff and all others at Presence Health truly care about the well-being of their patients. They become part of the Presence family, and everyone pulls together to help them get and stay healthy.
To authentically convey the power of compassion through the “This Is Presence” campaign, Presence Health needed the right photographer to portray real patient and employee situations from their sites of care. Formerly a newspaper photographer, Chicago native Tim Klein fit the photographic vision that Presence Health was looking for. He even described it as being perfect for his style.
The shoot felt like I was doing a traditional documentary story on the relationships at the different Presence facilities. Many of the moments were completely spontaneous.
The idea of the shoot was to capture real moments between patients and healthcare providers in an honest and compassionate way. The images would highlight the provider’s commitment to deliver an exceptional patient experience.
Despite the reportage feel, Tim worked on a lot of planning and production. His team included a producer and a production coordinator that contacted the various hospital associates to coordinate everyone’s schedules. Tim’s shoot was two week’s long with a lot of moving parts that required him to have several assistants, and a digital tech editing in real time.
The biggest challenge Tim had with this shoot was balancing the needs of the client, while also being sensitive to the healthcare staff and patients.
Some of the situations I documented were quite sensitive, and I wanted to make sure I didn’t get in the way of the doctors and nurses, and I didn’t want to disrupt the patients. All the patients are real in the campaign and I had to be very aware of their conditions.
The art director on the project informed Tim that Presence health loved the end results. Although Tim is not sure what the total future plans are for this project, he would love to do more work like this for this healthcare groups. Tim’s work with Presence Health helped showcase the group’s exceptional and compassionate care they provide for more than 4.5 million men, women and children in 11 hospitals, over 150 outpatient facilities, 27 senior care locations and dozens of doctors’ offices.
