So it’s Spring, and our adventure photographers have provided the magazines with images to kick our butts and start exercising. I myself have contributed to the effort by not playing as many Xbox video games while the sun is out. But these subjects are a little more proactive:
John Loomis’ portrait (above left) for Men’s Health of the “Marine Workout” shows how the USMC keeps those abs of steel. John mentioned:
Just watching them do their core training exercises caused me to lose 5 pounds!
In an attempt to only shoot for companies with “Men” in the title, John also shot Jacques Cousteau’s grandson for Men’s Journal (above right).
Mike Powell’s cover shot for Bicycling mag (above left) is tame in comparison to some of the action shots on his website. He’s employed stuntmen to impersonate office workers leaping over their cubicles.
And Ryan Allan’s Skateboard cover (above right) was a blast from his past. He founded the magazine 10 years ago, sold it (it’s now become the biggest skate mag in Canada), and was recently invited to shoot the anniversary edition. After selling the mag, Ryan went on to shoot many a Thrasher cover and “extreme” everything. He now specializes in youth culture/lifestyle photography. He spots trends before they hit, as he spends a lot of time with skateboarders, surfers, and his teenage daughter.
