Unfiltered: IG Live Interview with Kate Thornton

BY Varun Raghupathi 6 May 2020
Published, Instagram Live

Our second edition of “Unfiltered” brought Charleston, South Carolina-based Kate Thornton to Wonderful Machine’s Instagram Live. A veteran of both the retail and commercial sides of the industry, Kate’s managed to stay on top of things while homeschooling two youngsters during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During our chat, Kate also touched on a recent personal project that’s helped her reconnect with old clients. For years, Kate was a prolific wedding photographer and lives near many of the people she photographed on their special day. With two of her three children in tow (the youngest is a six-month-old baby), Kate traveled around her community and got images of former wedding clients — many of whom now have families of their own.

Kate, who recently helped Wonderful Machine detail the challenges inherent to transitioning from retail to commercial photography, has also been busy on the client-based front. In fact, right before she joined on our IG Live interview, she was talking with a client for an hour and a half to set up a potential shoot. What she found interesting was that people have varying levels of concern with regards to COVID-19. Some people are all too happy to carry on with shoots as you would during normal times, while other folks are more in line with adhering to present-day safety regulations. Kate, as you might imagine, always errs on the side of caution.

We look forward to continuing our weekly IG Live conversations every Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. If you can’t view the discussion live, check our YouTube page or our COVID-19 Resources page to get the link to the recorded videos.
