Web Ads: Feature Shoot, January 2014

BY Wonderful Machine 31 January 2014
Intel, Report Card, Web Ads

Throughout January, we ran a series of web ads on Feature Shoot. They have recently added a 728×90 ad option, which displays as a banner at the top of the home page. Because of this, we were able to include six images this month instead of four. We caught up with the featured photographers to get a bit of background on each image.

David Ellis / St. Paul, Minnesota

Image of a ballet dancer by St. Paul-based portraiture and lifestyle photographer David Ellis.

The selected image was done as a portfolio test shoot.  I met the dancer/model on an earlier assignment that featured the dance company she worked for.  My goal was to show the behind-the-scenes lifestyle of a ballet dancer.  Most people would think that smoking and drinking Mountain Dew would be the opposite of what a dancer might want to do.  According to my model friend, a lot of dancers have a crazy lifestyle–long, physically demanding practices, fatigue, and stress about work (not much different than photography?!).  Anyway, she had just quit smoking a couple of months before this shoot but was OK with lighting up for the sake of the picture.  As for the Mountain Dew, she drank it up. I had scouted the location and was expecting a perfect sunset right down the alleyway.  In most cases, I won’t postpone the shoot due to unexpected weather.  So, I had my assistant walk through the alleyway with an umbrella.  The cars were going by randomly.  The red tail light and the green umbrella matched the color of the can of Mountain Dew.  In this case, the bad weather worked out well.  The model has moved on to bigger venues– she is a featured performer on many big Broadway shows and has a very shiny future!

Ramon Palacios-Pelletier / Brooklyn, New York

Image of the Irving Hotel sign by Chicago and Miami-based travel photographer Ramon Palacios-Pelletier.

This image is part of my Moving to America project. It was taken on Irving Park Rd, about 20 minutes outside of Chicago on a beautiful Summer day!

Dean Casavechia / Nova Scotia, Canada

Image of Lawrencetown Beach in Nova Scotia by Canada-based travel photographer Dean Casavechia.

This image was taken while capturing some images for Destination Halifax, a tourism association in Nova Scotia.  The image was taken at Lawrencetown Beach, a big east coast surfing spot.  There was a large tropic storm working its way up the coast and I was there to get some shots of the surfers.  Fall in Nova Scotia brings great surf and an amazing color pallet, so it’s my favorite time of year to photograph there.

Lianne Milton/ Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Close-up of lychees by Brazil-based humanitarian and crisis photographer Lianne Milton.

The lychees are from a market in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Raymond Patrick / New York, New York

Aerial image of the Park Hyatt Tokyo by New York-based travel photographer Raymond Patrick.

Tokyo is the world’s most congested city with approximately 35 million people. When you see the city from a high vantage point, it’s absolutely stunning and surreal, especially at night with the flashing red lights on all the skyscrapers.  There is a certain calming quality to just watching the red lights flash across the horizon. This image is the Park Hyatt Tokyo, the hotel featured in the movie “Lost in Translation.”  The pool in the movie is at the top of one of the three towers, just under one of the triangular structures visible in the image.

Merek Davis / Phoenix, Arizona

An image of the sunflower fields in Burgundy taken by Phoenix-based travel photographer Merek Davis.

The image used in the banner was taken on a day off in the Burgundy region of France in May of 2011. We drove around taking in the miles and miles of sunflower fields.  In Arizona, all we have is miles of dirt, so this was an exciting change of scenery.
