Wolfram Schroll: Futurium

BY Lani Assaf 2 August 2018
Published, Photographer Spotlight

Hagen, Germany-based photographer Wolfram Schroll has worked with his client OBO Bettermann for many years now, and they recently sent him to photograph The Futurium: the most modern building in the entire city of Berlin.

Designed by the architects at Berlin-based firm Richter Musikowski, the building features state-of-the-art technology and is an almost entirely zero-energy building. Formerly known as the “House of the Future,” the Futurium was only recently designed and built. Many consultants and companies supported the project, with the planning time from the Futurium stretching from 2013 – 2015 and the construction from 2015 – 2017.

Although the building isn’t slated to open until the spring of 2019, Wolfram was hired to take these photographs to be used in publications that will go out to architects.

The goal of the Futurium is to make the general public aware of future-orientated developments of national and international importance. Focused on research and innovation, organizers plan to host events and exhibitions as they encourage dialogue about the future.

On the day of the shoot, when Wolfram arrived in Berlin, he photographed the building only during the evening and at night. The next day, he was permitted inside the building and in his own words:

It was breathtaking, really. The only problem was that I only had four hours to get all the shots I needed. And being unfamiliar with the building previously, I had to explore – go around and around to find new perspectives every few minutes. After my shoot time was up, I wasn’t sure I was entirely satisfied – there was so much to see and not enough time. But back at the hotel that evening, I looked through my photos and I think I was able to capture a tiny bit of the soul of the Futurium.
