David Papazian Shoots Ranger’s Ridge for Western Art & Architecture
California-based photographer David Papazian was published in Western Art & Architecture – a Montana-based magazine for art collectors and architecture aficionados across the US – showcasing photographs of Cyndie and Thom Bell’s 1980s ranch style home ‘Ranger's Ridge’ in central Oregon. Designed by Giulietti | Schouten Architects, the house is located on a basalt cliff surrounded by juniper trees in the high desert, with commanding views of the Deschutes River just below the horizon.
G+S Architects specialize in residential architecture, integrating both modern elements and traditional detail. David has been a long-term go-to for stunning imagery representing their detail-oriented craft, working for G+S Architects since 1997. Photographing roughly 4-5 projects for them per year, his first shoot was for Oregon Home Magazine involving a project on the Oregon Coast.
“G+S Architects are always professional to work with, from their inspiring modern designs to their proficient art direction during shoots.”
The Bells purchased the existing home on eight acres of land in Redmond, Oregon, with a vision to design their property by mixing Western pieces, abstract expressionism and classic art, in addition to sculpture and furniture, including modern Italian furnishings. The Bells hoped to achieve a harmonious melding of the woodsy natural environment with modern art and architecture.
Scheduling the shoot was challenging, with the on and off again winter weather of the Pacific Northwest. The home’s location in the high-desert climate was especially difficult at times, due to extreme temperature swings and dry conditions. Being from California, where the weather is often perfect and rarely fussy, David made sure to time his exterior shoots with a few good days of weather, filling the remainder of days with interior shots.
David notes the importance of “bringing the outside in” while trying to capture the landscape’s ability to complement the architectural design. The opportunity to bring depth into his photographic style, while capturing the wide outdoor views and incorporating the interiors, was David’s favorite part about the project.
“Central Oregon is one of the most scenic areas in America, and we wanted to incorporate the amazing natural location, highlighting the architects’ vision of home design with stunning views.”
