Photographer Spotlight

Greenville, South Carolina photographer Ian Curcio collaborated with local wealth management firm Nachman Norwood & Parrott to create dynamic portraits of their clients. Each photo represents the subject's relationship to their community and exhibits the "quiet confidence" that comes from sound financial planning.

Each image presents a client immersed in dynamic surroundings. Can you speak to how this matched the client's goals?

NNP is a wealth management firm focused on serving high-net-worth individuals with complex needs. We created portraits using actual NNP clients in a non-testimonial approach. The images allow potential clients to see their peers in everyday life, and it positions NNP as a behind-the-scenes anchor for their own personal confidence.

What were the shoots like?

Each shoot was very different. The first one we shot was of William in his home office. William is a classicly trained pianist and enjoys playing after work. Being able to listen to him play while we worked was a real treat. I think it helped ease him into the shoot as well. It certainly helped calm us. William's schedule didn't allow for much flexibility; we only had two hours to set up, light and shoot this image.

The portrait of DJ was being shot in a high-end active hotel lobby. Although he owns the hotel, we had to take this into consideration when planning for the shoot. For example, we were only given fifteen minutes to take control of two of the three elevators (at least one had to remain in use at all times).  It was also important to me that DJ felt invested in our vision. To begin with, we shot him actually standing in the elevator. Knowing his portrait was going to be a composite later in post-production, we had a second set with black seamless off to the side and had him step on to it after shooting him in the elevator.

The variation in setting across this series is striking. Was it the result of collaboration with each subject?

In a way it was. These are real people, in real spaces that reflect their individual personalities and/or businesses. For the portrait of Catriona, the Executive Director of Meals on Wheels, it just made sense to have her standing in the middle of their kitchen. She's recognizable by the community and she's portraying a confident demeanor knowing that the Meals on Wheels endowment is being safely managed by NNP
