A few months back, Mt. Pleasant-based photographer Kate Benson teamed up with her long standing client Cosabella, a lingerie designer, to illustrate its newest collection in a sophisticated way.
The goal was for the consumer to see that this lingerie makes you feel confident and beautiful. I really leaned on being a woman and how I would want to feel about buying lingerie when photographing these images.
This was the first time Cosabella had teamed up with a branding consultant, so a lot of the pre-planning focused on developing the brand’s target audience and creating a storyline that showcased it clearly. The Cosabella woman is defined as an an independent working woman who earns for herself, is confident, intelligent, and affluent. These keywords helped the model and Kate imagine a character to help further the imagery Cosabella wanted to illustrate.
The reaction to this project has been nothing but positive for Kate.
I love the photographs I captured that day! I loved having a story to tell and knowing who the girl was supposed to be and being able to translate that into the photographs was very rewarding.
Cosabella was absolutely blown away by the images. Before even wrapping up for the day, the owners and directors of the brand, who were sent screenshots, called immediately following congratulating everyone involved in creating such “gush” worthy photographs.
I look through the lens and think “what do I want to feel when I buy this?” That perspective is really what made the shoot successful. The model wasn’t objectified and photographed for a male consumer to come buy the lingerie, she was photographed empowered and confident because that is how the client wanted the consumer to feel about their product.
After shooting the campaign, Cosabella shared the images on its social media pages and on its blog. Additionally, a third party blog came across the campaign and was eager to showcase the photos, too!
Kate does not foresee any future plans for this project since fashion has such a short lifespan and collections are constantly being designed season after season. She does, however, think she might use the campaign as a personal promotion down the road.
