After months of being quarantined due to the pandemic, Tampa-based photographer Kate Holliday was itching to get back behind the camera. Together with stylist Dana Duchesne, producer Karlie Loland, and model Sadie Chamberlain, Kate organized an outdoor fashion editorial shoot for VULKAN Magazine.
Submitting to a publication is more of a creative outlet than anything. I photograph a lot of models for their portfolios and it can be restricting as far as creativity, especially in a lifestyle market. This way I get to express my creative side without the restrictions of agency requirements.
The shoot took place on the producer’s property, which has a horse stable and a field that provided the perfect backdrop for Kate’s vision. The photographer opted to shoot for about three hours in the late afternoon when the heat had subsided. Plus, at that time of day, she was able to capture natural golden hour lighting.
It’s been difficult for me personally to maintain a sense of creativity the past few months, so having this as an outlet was a huge release. Photographing fashion editorials on location like this is my favorite thing to shoot, so I’ve missed it terribly!
In addition to photographing Sadie, the team worked with one of the producer’s horses and an orphaned baby deer that the producer and her fiancé were rehabilitating. While the horse was generally cooperative, shooting with the deer was a unique challenge.
The deer is a wild animal, so she just wanted to bounce around and play. I just had to keep shooting in the hopes I would get at least one or two images of her before she bounced away!
Beyond diversifying to her own portfolio, this shoot helped Kate to elevate Sadie’s modeling work. Kate had worked with the model on her portfolio a few months prior, and the photographer thought she would make a good fit for her vision with this shoot.
Our model Sadie Chamberlin is a new face with very little experience. She takes direction very well and made it look easy working in such a challenging atmosphere.
To keep the crew small and the looks simple, the photographer opted not to work with hair and makeup artists. Though Kate would typically advise against this, she felt that the model’s young age of 17 years old and gorgeous skin would photograph fine without the help of professional hair and makeup.
The first look was actually Sadie’s prom dress that she never got to wear because of the quarantine, so I’m happy that I had a chance to get her some gorgeous photos of her wearing it.
