For October, we decided to keep it local and visit a couple Philadelphia ad agencies. So we called up our friends at Red Tettemer + Partners and Tierney and arranged to stop by.
Our first visit was to the self proclaimed “indie” ad agency, Red Tettemer + Partners. Red Tettemer—known for their quirky, fun creative style—has been steadily growing and recently acquired the equally hip and indie agency, Stick & Move, creating the combined shop of RT+P. Their wide array of clients include Under Armour, Dial for Men, International Spy Museum, Century 21 and more. They’ve also recently gained some fame for their Facebook swag giveaways (past RT attention grabbers have included finding Valentine dates for their employees and wacky bank ads).
The Red Tettemer team requested we bring lifestyle, food, and architecture specific books as they were working on a new campaign and were in the market for photographers with these specialties. With a good idea of what RT+P was looking for, our producers Jess Dudley and Craig Oppenheimer, made their way from our office to theirs, with several Tenba cases full of portfolios.
Once they arrived at Philadelphia’s historic One South Broad building, where RT+P now calls home, Jess and Craig admired the architecture and the beautiful office, which maintains the buildings original architecture, layout and details. They were lead to an ornate conference room, first saying hello to the possibly 20 year old cat Woodbine, where they laid out the books and catering and waited for the creatives while admiring the beautiful Philly view.
Soon after setting up, the RT+P art buyers, creative directors and art directors started streaming in and flipping through the books. They were eager to learn more about Wonderful Machine and our talented photographers. A few of the group favorites included Philly-shooter Paul S Bartholomew, who they thought might work for an upcoming architectural project, Austin-based Casey Dunn, who’s work they loved for its clean lines and colorful palette, and Chicago’s Saverio Truglia, whose ‘baby taped to the wall‘ image caught more than one eye.
After discussing RT+P’s upcoming projects, Wonderful Machine’s services and our photographers’ books, Jess and Craig packed up and headed back to WM headquarters.
A few days later, Jess was out once again to visit the full-service advertising and PR agency, Tierney. Tierney boasts a long list of clients including Bayer, TD Bank, McDonald’s, General Motors and more. This visit, however, was not quite the norm. Tierney had asked our talented and experienced producer, Jess (who’s also a regular contributor to A Photo Editor), to give a “Lunch & Learn” presentation to their creatives, reviewing the basics of licensing and production.
Jess’ lecture covered Wonderful Machine and what we’re all about and then went on to discuss licensing and production to Tierney’s art buyers. They wanted to have Jess reiterate the relationship between usage and cost and describe factors that influence fees. He also reviewed the elements of production including the processes involved from concept to invoice. The Tierney art buying and production department was grateful for the thoughtful review.
After the lecture, Jess once again headed back to the Wonderful Machine office and began planning our next reviews. Thanks for the good times, Philly. See you soon, Minneapolis!
