Recently, California MoonRise—a new Canadian fashion brand that is inspired by the California bohemian look—approached Rocco Ceselin looking for some fashion/lifestyle shots that had a natural feel. Rocco was the perfect pick for the project, as he is based in beautiful Los Angeles, California, and is no stranger to shooting dreamy fashion work in an open-air setting.
I love shooting outdoors! Either for fashion, lifestyle or portraits. Working with a crew on a lifestyle shoot in Malibu is a continuation of my ‘Americana’ outdoor series of fashion assignments, which I started two years ago. The client saw my portfolio online and specifically liked a previous shoot I did. They contacted me and we began working together.
The shoot was for their fall collection, so Rocco knew they needed to find a location with earthy and warm colors. Because of the drought, the park at El Matador State Beach (a beautiful set of cove beaches in Malibu) was pretty brown, yellow and dry, and it suited the overall feel. The client had a clear concept in mind, but since they were from Canada, they relied on Rocco’s team to fill in the blanks—they casted the talent, purchased the props and scouted all the locations. Additionally, to keep everyone comfortable and keep things running smoothly, they rented an RV on location and organized/sorted out all of the smaller details (crew, location, film permit) way in advance. In the end, the team effort paid off.
They loved the photos. The client was looking for an organic, natural look, without being too polished and high fashion. We shot mostly with natural light and the weather really helped us. It was a little foggy and misty in the morning with warm sun in the afternoon and a beautiful colorful sunset. A wonderful day for a fall collection photo shoot.
Rocco says it was a high-energy shoot that was fun for everyone. As always, he was thrilled to have the beautiful California coast at his disposal for the setting;
I’m blessed to work in California. There are endless locations and so many opportunities to create something special. Being Italian, I love the diversity of the landscape and how quickly we can move from one location to another. It’s very different from Europe, but so inspiring.
