Vienna, Austria-based photographer Stefan Fuertbauer has been photographing for DATUM Magazine for a number of years now, and for his latest assignment, he was asked to create a ‘tricky project involving balloons.’ The basic idea was to do something with helium-filled, golden letter balloons which turned out much more complicated than expected – but Stefan and his team figured it out, and these images made the cover, as well as complemented three feature stories in the magazine.
After we decided on the cover phrase ‘SAG ALLES AB’ (‘cancel everything’) and the 3 words ‘NÄHE’ (nearness), ‘ZEIT’ (time) and ‘WERT’ (value) for the feature stories, we had to work in a very tight time frame. Positioning the gas-filled balloons outdoors was mission impossible and we had to come up with an alternative solution. We finally decided to mount them on the floor instead which still was very hard to do on a windy day. Dozens of meters of gaffer tape and string later we finally managed to get the phrase framed.
